Storage Systems & Controllers

Storage is frequently used to describe the devices and data connected to the computer through input/output (I/O) operations -- that is, hard disk and tape systems and other forms of storage that don't include computer memory and other in-computer storage.

Enterprise storage refers to a centralized data depository that is designed for the needs of a large organization. Enterprise storage performs the same functions as smaller scale data storage solutions, but is more reliable and fault tolerant. Enterprise storage can also be scaled up to serve a large user base and heavy workloads without significantly slowing down the system.

Network-attached storage (NAS) is a hard drive storage subsystem that is attached to a local area network (typically, an Ethernet network) and assigned its own IP address, rather than being attached to a server. By removing storage access and its management from the department server, both application programming and files can be served faster because they are not competing for the same processor resources.

Network-attached storage consists of hard disk storage, including multi- disk RAID systems, and software for configuring and mapping file locations to the network-attached device. Network-attached storage can be a step toward and included as part of a more sophisticated storage system known as a storage area network (SAN).

Contact Tekmart and we will gladly advise on an appropriate storage system for your organisation.
